Leaving Ethiopia- bittersweet
The camels are back
Stage 34 – Bush camp to Moyale Kenya
86km, 3.5 hrs, 20kph (approximately)
Very difficult riding day even though it wasn’t too far. My legs felt like I peddled the whole way in sand, uphill and against the wind.
Big thunder storm at Bush camp made for beautiful light and we took a walk to singing wells. These are old wells where the men sing to keep cadence as they hand buckets of water up to their camels.
We crossed the border in Moyale Kenya, the crossing was routine. Hectic border town.
While getting a SIM card and local Kenyan currency. I’m approached by guy who had a little Upolstry shop and speaks English. I asked if he knew where I could find a zipper.
About a week ago my tent zipper had failed. I asked a guy on the street if he knew where I could get a zipper and he said there was a tent company down the street but encouraged me to try the old guy on the side walk with an old treadle sewing machine. I went up to the guy and he pulls a zipper out of a box that was the perfect size and about four feet long..
An hour latter and $5 ( 500 Kenyan shillings) later, it was as good as new. No more mosquitoes or blowing sand in the tent.
Highlights:
- Termite mounds
- Thunderstorm
- seeing the Milky Way at at 03:00
- Hyenas (whoooooopppp)
- NO mosquitoes
Wow, Morris! Your photo of the storm across the valley was absolutely stunning with the light behind you and dark clouds dumping rain. Every day must to a kaleidoscope of new images. Metta, my friend!
