Carefree? Nope Namibia just east of Windhoek
Riding with Craig and Tommy
Stage 75 – Witvlie to Windhoek
153km, 5:28 hr., 28.8kph – whew!
A little house keeping. Yesterday I included a picture of a sign to Windhoek. It was just a sign pointing towards the town which was still 200km away. I was actually approaching a town called Gobabis, which proudly claims the title of “Meat capital of Namibia”. Not sure now after resting why I found the sign interesting, a long time on the road and riding a hundred miles can make a guy do goofy things.
Today is Windhoek. And two rest days. We also change our heading from west to south and dirt roads. We are in a region where Afrikaans is spoken, and it has a heavy Dutch influence.
The European influence is clear in the architecture, chain stores, signs and color of people. For the last three months it has been somewhat rare to see outsiders. This was a German protectorate.
Today we saw several troops of wild Baboons, very skittish and watchful. Last night the Jackals sang. We are headed towards the skeleton coast and expansive wilderness.
It’s a long, long way to Tipperary and Carefree.
Good progress. I wonder if the people who contracted malaria were taking meds.. I kind of doubt it.
