Stage 59 – Chipata to Petauke Zambia
176km, 6:10 hrs, 28.5kph avg., 1300m vertical (4290), 115bpm average, max 150 aprox.
I gave myself a 5% – 10% chance of finishing the day, but with plenty of help from the boys, I made it. Mostly I drafted and had two pulls that were not too much on the climbing sections.
I bundled up last night to try and sweat it out and woke up about 8:30 soaking wet not sure if it was from the down sleeping bag or fever breaking.
Tomorrow is another century ( ride over 100 miles ) with more climbing. If I can get a good nights sleep I may have a chance.
Meanwhile the amazing Craig Tingle, with help from his brother Ian, continue to work on plan B, which is to get a new spindle and bottom bracket shipped out of Johannesburg to Lusaka or Victoria falls. Because of Easter Vic falls looks like the surer bet.
Meanwhile I continue to ride our team doctors, Harriet’s Bike. She has been kind enough to ride one left behind by a section rider. Unbelievable the help I’ve received.

Morris, just got back from a ride and thinking about you. There’s nothing wrong with taking a day off. Instead of riding sick until you get a scheduled rest day and totally running down your immune system and body ….Take a Day Off. You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel and how much more you’ll enjoy each riding day. If you don’t, your body will never really recover and it will take away from the wonderful experience of ridng through Africa.
